ADHD & Neurodiversity Therapy in Falmouth

Therapy that gets it — from a counsellor with lived experience of ADHD and dyslexia

Being neurodivergent in a world built for neurotypical minds is exhausting. You might be juggling late diagnosis, years of masking, executive function struggles, rejection sensitivity, or the quiet burnout that comes from working twice as hard to look like you're keeping up. Therapy with someone who understands neurodiversity from the inside can feel very different from therapy that tries to fit you into a generic model.

I'm Sam — a counsellor based in Falmouth, working across Cornwall in-person and online. I have lived experience of ADHD and dyslexia myself, and I work with neurodivergent adults who are looking for a therapy space that adapts to how their brain actually works.

What Neurodivergent Clients Often Bring to Therapy

Whether you're diagnosed, self-identified, or still working it out, the experiences below are common — and worth bringing into the room:

Late ADHD or autism diagnosis (or wondering)

Years of masking and the burnout that follows

Rejection sensitivity and intense self-criticism

Executive function struggles — starting, finishing, switching

Sensory overwhelm and overstimulation

Anxiety, overthinking and "what if" loops

Imposter feelings at work or in study

Feeling misunderstood by previous therapists

You don't need a formal diagnosis to start therapy. Many of my clients are exploring their neurodivergent identity for the first time — and that exploration is welcome here.

How Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy Works

The goal isn't to "fix" how your brain works. It's to understand it, work with it, and build a life that fits you — rather than one you have to mask through.

1. Sessions that adapt to your brain

Tangents are welcome. Stimming is welcome. If you process better with movement, fidgeting, or by typing rather than speaking, we work with that. Sessions are paced and structured around what helps you think clearly.

2. Unpacking masking and burnout

Many neurodivergent adults arrive in therapy exhausted from years of performing "fine." We make space to notice the cost of that — and to find safer, more sustainable ways of being in the world.

3. Working with rejection sensitivity and self-criticism

The inner critic in a neurodivergent mind can be relentless. Therapy helps you understand where it came from, separate it from your sense of self, and reduce its grip on your day-to-day life.

4. Practical strategies that actually fit

Generic "just make a list" advice doesn't tend to land. We focus on strategies built around your real-world energy, attention, and sensory needs — not someone else's idea of productivity.

Why a Therapist with Lived Experience Matters

Clients tell me again and again that the difference is not having to translate. You don't need to explain why you can hyperfocus for six hours and then forget to eat, why a "small" sensory thing wiped you out, or why the timeline of your week doesn't look like anyone else's. We start from a place of "of course."

No need to over-explain or justify your experience

Pace and structure can flex week to week

Affirming — not pathologising — of how you think

Online sessions available across Cornwall

Written follow-ups available if that helps you process

Therapy should meet you where you are — not ask you to perform a tidier version of yourself to get the help you need.

Who This Therapy Is For

This service is suitable for you if you identify with any of the following:

Diagnosed ADHD

Diagnosed or self-identified autism

AuDHD (autistic + ADHD)

Dyslexia, dyspraxia or dyscalculia

Awaiting assessment or unsure

Late-diagnosed adults

Autistic / ADHD burnout

Parents of neurodivergent young people

You don't need to arrive with answers. Therapy is a good place to bring the questions.

What to Expect in Sessions

Sessions take place in a calm, low-pressure environment, either in-person in Falmouth or online across Cornwall. There's no expectation to perform, to make eye contact, or to talk in a particular way. We find what works for you.

Each session is shaped around your needs and may include:

  • Making sense of late diagnosis or self-identification
  • Exploring masking and what's underneath it
  • Working with rejection sensitivity and the inner critic
  • Recovery from autistic or ADHD burnout
  • Strategies for executive function and overwhelm
  • Building a self-image that isn't shaped by shame

Therapy is collaborative. You set the focus, and I bring both professional training and personal understanding of what it's like to live in a neurodivergent brain.
